What the Blind Girl Counted

Mara, 22, a soil-science student from Rostock, leaves a bar on a November night and wakes in a private clinic with a wristband that reads P-12, a nurse who calls her only by that number, and eyes that will not focus. Nobody explains why she is there.

Someone is searching for her: her sister Lena and her flatmate Quentin push a missing-person report past a detective who has almost nothing to go on. Inside the clinic, Mara finds a man in the next ward who has been Patient Three for three years, and learns that the twelve patients are not being treated.

They are being sold. With a pencil stub, a sweet wrapper and a count of stairs, she and Jonas start planning their way out, and every day the director's schedule gets closer to the night she is meant to leave.
