The Last Song

For ninety thousand years, something at the heart of the dark has been crying. Now it has stopped, and started walking. A year after the far light of Ithren was saved, Commodore Amara Kesh stands at her friends’ wedding, deaf to every sound, and learns that a whole world has fallen still.

Every person on Orlen has frozen at their windows, eyes turned to a sky that is no longer empty. The grieving thing in the dark is Maren, the First Light’s lost twin. Drawn home by the sound of her own name, she brings with her a tide of sorrow that stills everyone in its path.

The government’s answer is the Silence Engine, a weapon built to destroy her. Amara is one of only two people Maren has ever heard of, and the only one who might reach her in time.

With an eight-year-old girl holding the far end of a lane across the galaxy, Amara flies into the deepest dark there is. There she must prove that the answer to grief was never a weapon, but a song.
