The Far Light

Every night for three thousand years, the Vael of Ithren have climbed their crystal spire and sung seven notes into the dark. Nobody ever answered, until a seven-year-old girl on a frontier world hears them in her dreams.

Ithren lies four hundred light-years beyond the last lit star, its light will fail in forty days, and the Council has forbidden any lane into the unknown. Captain Amara Kesh is going deaf to the beacons she was born to hear, but she has one crossing left in her.

With a patched-together ship, a loyal crew and a child as their only translator, she flies the longest jump in human history.

Waiting at the end are a frozen world ringed by advancing darkness, a people losing the will to sing, and a girl named Tirr whose brother leads the Quiet. To save Ithren, Amara must teach two species to sing as one, and discover what has been grieving in the dark all along.
