Rejected By The Alpha, Chosen By The Pack
123 chaptersComplete4 from 2 reviews
He rejected me in a loading yard before it was light, with the whole pack standing in the cold watching him do it, and the worst part is that he was not wrong.
Two summers before that I stood on a fire line above our own valley and told twenty people to hold, and I was wrong, and three of them did not walk out. One of them was his brother.
Then a man whose wife died on my line picked up his bag, and walked past the Alpha, and stood behind me.
That is where this starts.
The ground is finished. The burn has not come back and it is not going to, the deer went west with it, and a second bad winter took what was left. There is nothing under that country any more that will feed a pack.
So the Rautios are leaving the Upper Peninsula and going the long way round Lake Superior to Minnesota, with five vehicles, no money to run them the whole distance, and one season to get there before the weather shuts the road.
Marta Koski can read ground and water and weather better than anybody left alive in that pack, because she was raised on the fire crew. And she has done the worst work in that valley for two years without ever being asked, because of what she did on the hill.
On the morning of the leaving she steps out in front of everybody and asks to be the one who finds the road.
And Jonas Rautio, who is the Alpha, and who was her mate from the night she came of age, says no. And then he says the rest of it, out loud, in a yard, in front of the whole pack, and he cuts the bond between them where everybody can hear it.
That is all it takes to be rejected. One minute, and it is done.
Then Vern Hakala, who buried his wife because of a call Marta made, picks up his bag and walks past his Alpha and stands behind her. Then an old woman who has to be helped to her feet. Then the man who keeps the trucks running. Then eight more. Eleven of them. And in the morning they start walking, and the pack chooses her the only way a pack ever really chooses anybody, which is with their feet, a day at a time, all the way round that lake, while the man who rejected her walks somewhere in the middle of his own people.
Being rejected takes a minute. Being chosen takes the whole distance, and it costs more.
And the pack that agreed to take them in at the other end has changed its mind about what it wants.
