The Alpha's daughter is supposed to be worth something. Tonight I found out what I'm worth to my stepmother: one signature on a surrender.

"For Alpha Adam to take our pack without a fight," she told me, "I have to give you to him in marriage."

She said it the way she might tell me the river had flooded. Plainly. Already decided.

My father has been gone one winter. Our pack lost the war at the border before his grave had settled. And now the woman who wore his ring is handing his only blood to the man who beat us.
