Avery Mercer is twenty-nine, a careful chemist who tests harbor mud for a living, and she follows one rule: she never takes a man without a reason. She keeps her reasons in order, the way her family has kept them for a hundred years in a set of handwritten books, in the old net loft at the end of Pier 3 in Tacoma.

Then a quiet dock hand named Daniel, who stammers on land and never on the water, starts to notice her. A detective with a steady pulse starts counting names.
