He Fell in Love with Me Too Late

Seth Scott hasn't come home in three days. His wife's messages sit on read.

Then a stranger's account sends Melody a photograph: her husband asleep, shirtless, in a young woman's bed. Then more. Seth with the girl's head on his shoulder. Seth's arm around her waist. Seth at her sink in an apron, cooking with the same hands that once promised, on a floury kitchen floor, to only ever cook for one woman.

One line comes with them: "If you want the truth, come to Maple Gardens."

What Melody finds there ends her marriage in a single morning. What she finds a month later, in a hospital stairwell, ends everything else. She is dying. She has months. And the girl standing on her medical report reads it, smiles and tells Seth it's just a cold.

So Melody stops begging. She packs one suitcase, walks away with the childhood friend who came back, and goes to see the world with the time she has left.
